“Don’t be afraid to show your true colors”

As we continue the conversations of how to treat each other better, the clouds clear to unveil a rainbow — enter Pride month! Pride month is a representation of the progress that can result from making your voice heard. It's been fifty years since patrons of the Stonewall Inn fought back against a police raid and demanded gay rights. As a result, in 1970 New York held the very first Gay pride parade in the history of America! This would carve the path for much-needed progress in gay rights.

Parades are not at our reach at the moment due to social distancing, but there are still multiple ways to continue to empower the LGBTQIA+ community and celebrate:

Being Proud

Expressing your true self isn’t an easy feat. It’s a quest that takes years, it takes courage to go against the grain, it takes valor to shout your truth.

For those of you who are navigating your identity, take your time, love yourself, and find your local community to stay connected with those who have gone through the same journey.

For the loud and proud, celebrate another year of freedom by demonstrating your pride with a LGBTQ+ flag outside your house or simply celebrating your truth and retelling your tale via video chat with a loved one.

Openness may not completely disarm prejudice, but it’s a good place to start.

Being an Ally

Being an ally first begins with… you guessed it, education.

Self-education can make a big difference when you have a family member or a friend who is part of the LGBTQ+ community. Not only will they feel your willingness to understand them better, but it will also build a stronger society. A society that understands the history that has been necessary to move minds forward.

Today there are many exciting ways to learn history. Explore the ever-growing Augmented Reality Monument created by NYC LGBT+ Community center and the National Park services with the help of Google to expand access to LGBT+ history. How cool is that?! 🙈
